Kill the wabbit, Fire the Witer

Posted by: JaX

This is a response to an opinion piece on the complexity LA website that addresses bunny hopping. All opinions expressed in this article are those of the writer and do not necessarily represent those of the Dallas Venom.

You can find the article here.

The current form of bunny hopping has been around in source since the inception of the game. So, naturally, the arguments for both sides aren't very new either. Long exhausted are the calls for some kind of regulation, a straight up ban, or for the game developers to implement a fix. CEVO tried its hand at policing bunny hopping, and was only left with disputes of little merit and petty arguing. Currently, bunny hopping is legal under CEVO rules.

This article brings nothing new to the table and presents known facts in a fashion that is neither new or creative. The video attached to this piece couldn't be more misleading, it is a gross exaggeration. Yes all the things shown in the video are possible with the normal server config, but consider the in game viability of some of the things shown. First of all, most of the jumps are done from running on top of someones head which provides a great speed boost from a stand still, which bunny hopping does not. It is also not the least bit practical. This technique requires two people to be occupied essentially putting the team at a disadvantage. Furthermore, the speed advantage gained barely makes up for time lost setting up the boost, and thats assuming it is done under perfect conditions on the first try. Last, but certainly not least, is that in this video bunny hopping is used only to preserve the speed gained from launching off another players head, only on one jump does he use bunny hopping to gain speed, going from A to B (Part of which was done using noclip...). In essence, the video doesn't really demonstrate the bunny hopping he is arguing against, just a tool to make him seem right.

Most of what was shown in the video is possible using one person, but again, the results are not nearly as advantageous as what the video showed. This was already well known and been argued about ad nauseum. Basically, this article accomplished nothing other than make the author look like a source hater with a blatant agenda. All of the “problems” are already known, its solutions that are lacking. If people have that big of a problem with bunny hopping, they would put their effort in to finding a viable way to “fix” it , not saying the same things that we've heard many times before.

I, along with many others, will continue to bunny hop. Tell me I should “play the game its meant to be played” (because your way is the right way) or that without it I would blow, whatever. The reality is that bunny hopping is here, its legal, and doesn't seem to be going anywhere for a while.

I believe you meant writer in the title.

Second, I don't think this was written all too well.

Third, who wrote this?

Fourth -- The article name has been beaten to death...

Bunnyhopping should be taken out of competive play. Its common sense when valve fixed the 1.6 engine to help competive play and the same should be done with source. Just because you jump with mousewheel down doesn't mean you should be able to kill me. I think we all have died to people bhopping rather then just straight up out gunning someone.

ps brawrr is a novice.

im not here saying it shouldnt be taken out, im saying that we know everything that was said. It was about how bogus that article really was, and how it didnt present facts clearly

Brawwwr lays down the law, that video was "stacked evidence" look what I CAN do, but no ACTUAL team does. He could have had a valid point if he hadn't used those ridiculous setups and shown bunnyhopping in its true form but with a video that uses sv_cheat commands and ridiculous setups to illustrate its point I couldn't really take him seriously either

The only outcome I see from having no bhop, is that more 1.6 people will derange themselves over Source, and less hardcore CSS-ers will be watching CGS.

stop being stubborn and bind your mousewheel people. i played cs for 7 years with spacebar as my only jump. about 6 months ago i was sick of being stubborn and i learned how to bunny hop. I am not that great at bunnyhopping but i think that it provides one more skill that i can use in certain situations. get used to it and start playing aware
